There is a phase in many 400-metre programmes where speed feels almost miraculous.

Athletes get quicker over 30 metres and suddenly the race opens up. Early splits feel easier. The final bend stops being a place of panic. Coaches talk about “headroom” and “buffer” and, for once, those words feel accurate rather than hopeful. Speed appears to be doing everything endurance was supposed to do and more.

This is where speed earns its reputation as the ultimate solution.

And for a while, it is.

But if you stay in the event long enough — if you coach athletes beyond the first breakthrough rather than just to it — you start to see a different pattern emerge. Speed continues to improve, sometimes dramatically, and yet the 400 metres begins to resist again. Times flatten. Fatigue becomes erratic. Training quality oscillates. Athletes produce occasional exceptional runs but struggle to repeat them.

At this point, many coaches make the wrong inference. They assume speed has stopped mattering.

It hasn’t.

What has happened is that speed has changed the nature of the problem, and the system underneath it has not kept pace.

Speed raises the ceiling of performance, but it also raises the cost of operating anywhere near that ceiling. Faster athletes are not just running quicker; they are placing far greater mechanical and metabolic demands on themselves every time they train and race. Ground contact forces rise. Rates of force development increase. The anaerobic contribution per repetition grows. Recovery becomes more expensive.

Early in development, speed gains reduce fatigue because the athlete is still running broadly the same race at a lower relative intensity. The system is relieved. Everything feels easier.

Eventually, that relief disappears.

As speed continues to rise, athletes stop running the same race. They commit earlier because they can. They train faster because that is now required. They accumulate stress at a rate they have never experienced before. Fatigue returns, but this time it is not the blunt, predictable fatigue of under-speeded racing. It is volatile. Some days the athlete feels untouchable. Other days they fall apart.

This volatility is often mislabelled as a lack of toughness, discipline, or focus. In reality, it is usually a lack of support capacity.

This is the point at which speed-only thinking quietly breaks down.

Maximum sprint speed does not fail because it stops influencing performance. It fails because it begins to outpace the athlete’s ability to absorb and express it consistently. The athlete has become fast enough to expose weaknesses that were previously irrelevant.

This is where aerobic capacity — long dismissed as secondary — suddenly becomes unavoidable.

Not because the 400 metres has changed its energy demands in a simplistic way, but because the athlete’s training and racing environment has changed. Higher speeds compress recovery windows. Sessions become denser. Small inefficiencies accumulate quickly. Without sufficient aerobic support, the athlete cannot stabilise the cost of being fast.

MAS and vVO₂ do not suddenly become performance drivers at this stage. They become enablers. They allow speed to remain usable. They allow quality to be repeated. They allow fatigue to become predictable rather than chaotic.

This distinction matters. Many coaches recognise that speed-only approaches stall, but misidentify the solution. They chase endurance in the abstract, piling on volume or intensity without reference to what it is meant to support. The athlete becomes tired, but not more stable. Speed expression suffers. The coach concludes that endurance work “doesn’t suit” the athlete.

In reality, the endurance work was never aligned to the demands speed had created.

The problem is not that speed-only athletes lack endurance in a general sense. It is that their aerobic systems are not scaled to the cost of their speed. They can produce extraordinary efforts, but cannot repeat them. They can tolerate isolated hard sessions, but not sustained quality across weeks and months.

This is why some of the most naturally fast athletes in the event appear unreliable. Their ceiling is high, but their system cannot hold them there. Speed has carried them to a place their support structures were never built to sustain.

Elite 400-metre athletes are never truly speed-only, even when their profiles suggest otherwise. Their aerobic qualities may not impress distance coaches, but they are always sufficient for the demands imposed by their speed. They recover quickly. They tolerate dense blocks of high-quality work. They arrive at championships able to reproduce performance, not just hope for it.

This is not accidental. It is the quiet work that follows speed breakthroughs rather than precedes them.

The most useful way to think about the relationship is sequential. Speed creates the opportunity. Aerobic capacity protects it. Fatigue tells you whether the sequence has been respected.

When speed rises faster than support, instability follows. When support follows speed, progress consolidates. The order matters far more than the absolute level of either quality.

This is why arguments about whether the 400 metres is a sprint or an endurance event miss the point entirely. The event does not reward allegiance to a category. It rewards timing.

Speed will take an athlete a long way in the 400 metres. Often further than seems reasonable. But eventually, speed alone runs out of road. When that happens, the solution is not to abandon speed, nor to dilute it, but to build the infrastructure required to keep it alive.

The best programmes understand this intuitively. They lean hard into speed when it changes the race, and then quietly, almost unglamorously, do the work that allows that speed to remain usable.

In the end, the 400 metres does not punish speed. It punishes speed that is unsupported.

And that distinction — more than any physiological label — is what separates athletes who break through once from those who stay there.
